Election Judge FAQ

Have questions about being a judge? We've answered some of the most common questions below. If you don't see what you're looking for, send an email to info@urcnd.org, and we'll do our best to help you find the information you're after.

What does an election judge do?

After the election clerk checks the voter’s ID against the poll book (list of eligible voters), they will hand the voter a ticket to take to an election judge. The election judge checks the ticket and then ensures the voter gets the right ballot by matching the number of the ticket to the ballot number. There may be other duties as well, such as helping voters who choose to use the express vote system, answering questions, etc.

Do I have to work both the primary and general elections?

You can volunteer for either election or both. We also need judges for early voting and to process absentee ballots.

What are the hours and times?

These are subject to change, but the Cass County Election Board has worked diligently to secure locations. Early voting has expanded hours this cycle.

Primary

Early voting: Tuesday, June 4th, through Friday, June 7th 11AM – 7PM; Saturday, June 8th, 11AM to 5 PM

Election Day: Tuesday, June 11th 7AM to 7PM

General

Early voting: Tuesday, October 29th through Friday, November 1st from 11am to 7pm; Saturday November 2nd from 11am to 5pm

Election Day: Tuesday, November 5th 7AM to 7PM

Absentee Ballot Processing: By law, absentee ballots cannot be counted until after the polls have closed on election day. However, absentee ballot processing (comparing signatures, comparing voters to the poll book, etc.) may begin as early as three days prior. The Cass County Election Board will set the dates and times based on the number of absentee ballots requested and/or returned.

Are there split shifts available?

The preference is to recruit poll workers who are able to work the polls all day; every day. However, with more polling places open this election cycle, we may need to recruit additional people to fill in a few vacancies. If you have specific time constraints, please let us know when you fill out the form, and we will do our best to make sure you have an opportunity to participate.

How many election judges are needed?

The numbers below are for full time judges, i.e., those that can work all days from beginning to end.

Early Voting

Primary: 42

General: 49

Election Day

Primary: 170

General: 204

As noted in the question on split shifts, Cass County Elections would still like to receive the names of people who cannot work the entire time. You may be called to fill in vacancies or for individuals who fall ill. In addition, district chairs will eventually need to recruit individuals for the canvassing board. If you do not serve as an election judge, you may be eligible for that role. Stay tuned for more info on canvassing board opportunities.

Is there training for election judges?

Yes! Election judges are required to attend training and will paid for that time. The number of sessions will be expanded this cycle to help ensure a training session fits into everyone’s busy schedule. Judges are only required to attend one session.

This training will acquaint you with the process, your duties, as well as some of the unique scenarios that may come up. In addition, Sherriff Jahner and his team will be conducting election security training for poll workers as well.

What are the qualifications for being a judge?

You must be a legal voter in Cass County. Voters who don’t reside in Cass should contact their district chair for opportunities in other parts of the state.

How much will I get paid?

Pay rate is $15.34/hr. for election judges.
